Hull and Machinery insurance

Provides coverage for physical damage and collision liability arising out of the ownership and/or operation of vessels. Additional perils such as machinery damage and negligence losses are also covered.

The scope of cover depends on the policy's terms and conditions:

  • " All risks"

The French Form covers the vessels in the event of a total loss and in the event of a partial loss (particular average), all risks being covered unless specially excluded.

  • "Named perils"

covers the vessel against a restricted and limited number of events such as collision, explosion, fire ...

Liability insurance

The collision liability, which is covered by the Running Down Clause (R.D.C.) or Collision Clause as it is often described, is one aspect of third party liability which is almost universally covered by Hull and Machinery policies. The choice as to whether this aspect of coverage is insured under the H&M policy or P&I Club is usually determined by price but the know how of the broker may assist in determining what scheme will fit the Shipowners needs.

Subsidiary products

  • "Increase value" (I.V.) cover

Provides coverage following declaration of total loss under the H&M policy and the indemnity is based on an agreed percentage of the Hull value.

  • "Loss of hire"

Loss of hire insurance is designated to cover the Owners when the ship has been forced to cease trading.
