Protection and Indemnity Insurance is a concept which came about in the middle of the 19th century. Protection and Indemnity insurance, commonly referred to as "P&I", provides cover to shipowners and charterers against third-party liabilities in connection with the operation of the vessel.
Damage to cargo caused by improper stowage, or for loss of life or personal injury to passengers or crew, loss of or damage to property, whether moveable or fixed such as docks and other harbour facilities, through an act or omission for which the shipowner is legally responsible, are examples of typical exposures .
The limits of cover available from the P&I Clubs market, each ship,and any one occurrence, are approximately $ 4.5 billion for non-oil pollution claims and up to $ 1 billion for claims in respect of oil pollution.
Over the last few years the mutual Clubs faced challenging new fixed P&I premium facilities.
